Multi-Color Sucker Spawn

Hi fellas,

I am giving this a shot, but I can guarantee that mine won't be as good as flyslingers. But here it goes. I just moved here from Colorado Springs, so I am going to use an old recipe that worked in the past in my hometown of Indiana, PA. I figured it was a pretty easy pattern, but I have not seen it tied in multicolors very often. I have had luck with it and my dad loves the pattern when he is going for Steelhead. I hope it works for you.

Recipe

Picture
Fly: Multicolor Sucker Spawn
Hook: Mustad 3906B Wet Nymph Hook Size 10
Thread: Rumpf Red
Weight: Lead .025
Tail: Krystal Flash
Body: Standard Red Yarn (around hook)
Glo Bugs Micro Color Yarn - Salmon Egg and Cream Delight

First things first, grab a beer.

Step 1

Picture
I typically don't like to use splitshot so I tie most of my nymphs heavy, but feel free to put as much or as little lead on your fly as you like.

Step 2

Picture
Once you have wrapped your lead around the hook's shaft, I use a piece of standard red sewing yarn to wrap around the shaft in order to cover the lead.  Standard yarn is typically three strands, but I use just one of the strands.  Wrap the yarn thick enough to cover the lead.

Step 3

Picture
I then use some Krystal Flash.

Step 4

Picture
I attach enough so that I have enough for a tail as well as an equal portion that hangs over the head.  I have found that the flash is just enough to grab the attention of a fish as it drifts by.

Step 5

Picture
Next, I cut 4 equal length strands of my body yard (2 Cream Delight and 2 Salmon Egg).  I like to keep the Cream Delight (lighter) yarn on the inside and the Salmon Egg (darker) on the outside.  I attach the four strands to the butt of the hook.

Step 6

Picture
I then take all 4 strands and begin to tie them to the hook in a bubble fashion.  By "bubble" I mean, I try to make the strands of yarn look like a tiny egg sitting on my hook.  When done with one set of 4 strands, it should look like 4 eggs sitting side-by-side on the hook.

Step 7

Picture
Continue attaching sets of eggs up the shaft of the hook.

Step 8

Picture
When you get to the top of the hook, tie off the yarn and cut the remains.

Finished!

I then like to tie the Krystal Flash back into the head so that it is suspended over the top of the fly's body.  When the fly gets wet, this flash floats around the fly.  I think it adds to the eye appeal when in the water.
