Lime Sally Tutorial

Here we go... Well first I have to thank Randy Ash (RAsh) for this pattern that he gave me some time ago. This pattern is an excellent brookie fly, or at least I think so. I need to work on my tying so don't be to hard on me.

Recipe

Hook: Mustad 94833 #16 Dry Fly Hook
Thread: Chartreuse and Cream
Body: Chartreuse and Cream dubbing mixed
Wing: Elk Hair
Hackle: Medium Dun
Tail/ Egg Sack: Red Floss

Step 1

First tie in the red floss to imitate the egg sack.

Step 2

Cut off the left over floss and begin wrapping chartreuse thread. Start close to the eye and work towards the back and cover about half the floss.

Step 3

Prepare the dubbing by taking chartreuse and cream and blending them together. I use about half as much cream as I do chartreuse. Next twist the dubbing around the thread and begin to wrap towards the eye.

Step 4

I like to tie off here before I start the wing. To prepare the for the wing, cut off a slight amount of elk hair and put in the hair stacker (in my case it's a 22 Mag case). See Below.

Step 5

Now that you have the elk hair stacked you can begin tying the wing on.

Step 6

Trim the excess hair from the front of the fly.

Step 7

I usually switch to cream colored thread to tie on the hackle. Pick the correct size hackle from the cape for the size hook you're using. I try to use the hook gap for this, but I'm not very good at it. Next tie one the hackle and begin wrapping toward the eye. (See below)

Finished!

Once the hackle is wrapped, tie off and use cement to finish the fly.  Maybe next time my tying will be better. They really do work!
