Ray's Foam Slider

Ray Greynolds

Tail: Marabou
Body: Dubbed underbody with foam shellback, and hackle wrapped to the front.
Head: Foam
Notes: This is a great top water for all species, and it works good when fished at night.  I also tie this fly in black on a size 8 hook.  It can be fished on a sink tip to represent a dragonfly nymph.  White, Black, and Chartreuse are good colors.  Rubber legs can also be added to the fly.  If you want to move more water don't trim the foam to close to the head.

1. Tie in the marabou to about 3/4 of the way up the hook.  This adds a base to glue the foam to.

2. Tie in a grizzly hackle.

3. Cut a piece of foam 1 and 1/2 times the length of the hook, and as wide as the hook gap.

4. Cut the end of the foam to a point and secure with a couple of thread wraps.

5. Dub the underbody 3/4 the way up the hook.

6. Put a bead of super glue on the dubbing and tie down the foam at the front.  Trim excess foam and save.

7. Wrap the hackle to the front.

8. Before putting on the head, build up a thread base to glue the head to.  Take your bodkin and punch a hole in the center of the foam piece you saved.  Work the piece of foam onto the hook eye.  Apply super glue to the thread base, pull back the ends of the foam and tie down.  Whip finish and trim the foam on top and bottom.
