Hot Hayne Parachute

Hot Hayne Parachute AuSable (HHAP) - Phil Smith's
version
The pictured HHAP is the way that I normally tie
my HHAP's, HHP's, or HotHayne's (several names exist for this awesome
fly). The fly, and dubbing, is credited to Ed Hayne. Whom a volume of good
things could be written about. The Hot Hayne dubbing is a top secret recipe of
multiple mixed dubbings, Ed has this recipe in a safety deposit box and will
not divulge the information, don't even try. He does, at times, give away
packages of his dubbing and I've been fortunate to have gotten some. He makes
the dubbing by the pound, but does not sell it. The root color is salmon
(best I can tell). Of course you could mix some various dry fly dubbings yourself
to look similar. Ed's original formula for the HHAP calls for something
different for the tail, but I use deer hair. Depending on my mood, I'll use
either calf body hair or synthetic parachute post material for the post.
Tail: Deer Hair
Body: Hot Hayne Dubbing
Thread: HOT ORANGE
Post: Calftail/Calf Body Hair/Synthetic - White
Hackle: 3 turns of grizzly
The key that unlocks the whole thing is the hot
orange thread. The dubbing's secret is when it gets wet, as it has a translucent
glow around the body and the orange thread seems to glow. This is as close to
a secret weapon fly as I have ever used. I won't be caught dead on a stream
without it from March to November in at least #14's and #16's.
