Green Weenie by Jason Butcher

Green Weenie

There isn’t much I can say about this pattern that most folks haven’t already heard.  If you are one of the few that have never heard of this fly… and you fish for brookies… you can thank me when you see me!!!  I do not know who tied the first green weenie… if you “google” the term green weenie, you will see hundreds of patterns with hundreds of different names of folks who tie it.  This is a very simple, versatile pattern that I always have in my fly box.

If the brook trout is “God’s gift to dry fly fishing”, then the Green Weenie is “God’s gift to dry fly fisherman who pursue brook trout”.  This fly has as many versions as the ant, but this is the version that I use for my fishing.  I tie this pattern for the dry and I soak the fly in scotch-guard, and allow it to sit for a few hours before taking it out.  I also use a thick pastey (sort of like petroleum jelly) floatant.  I tie this same model with a black bead head and use it as a nymph.  Although this fly is my “go to fly”, when I fish for brookies, I also use it in the late spring and summer for browns and “chubs”.
